Wednesday Tip Day: Storage of Produce

My instinct tells me to put my fruits and veggies in the fridge, but that's not always the best way to store produce.
Bananas- Store on a separate plate in a cool dry place.  The low temperatures of the fridge speed up spoilage.
Cucumbers- Store in a plastic shopping bag.  The fridge makes them watery.
Potatoes- The fridge causes the starch to turn into sugar and they will be too sweet once cooked.
Tomatoes- Keep in a spot away from windows.  The cool air of the fridge dulls the flavor and increases acidity.

The Rubbermaid Produce Savers are amazing! You can order them from Amazon for around $13 for a set of four. They keep my salad greens fresh for a whole week or more!

If you cut your celery and wash it, then wrap it tightly in foil, it will keep for a very long time. Sometimes you might have to cut a little brown off the end but other than that it works.
BTW, if your celery goes limp, cut a little off the bottom and put the stalks in a glass of water in the fridge. It will make it crispy again!

Great tips! I needed to learn how to better store our veggies since we are buying more of them a lot more often. :0)
